Definition
Let be a locally compact group and let be the -algebra of Borel sets of . A left Haar measure on is a measure on such that:
- is a Radon measure: it is finite on compact sets, outer regular on Borel sets and inner regular on open sets;
- is not the zero measure;
- is left-invariant: for every and every , where .
A right Haar measure is defined in the same way with in clause 3.
Remarks
Example: Lebesgue measure on . It is finite on compact sets, regular and nonzero, and for every and Borel set .
Non-example: the Dirac measure on is a nonzero Radon measure but fails clause 3, since and .
In integral form, left invariance says for every and every compactly supported continuous . If is a left Haar measure, then is a right Haar measure. A left Haar measure gives positive measure to every nonempty open set.
