Statement

Model the oceanic lithosphere as the half-space z>0z > 0, with zz the depth. Let it have constant thermal conductivity kk and thermal diffusivity κ\kappa, and no internal heat sources. Assume heat is carried only by vertical conduction. Let the rock have the uniform mantle temperature TmT_m at time t=0t = 0, when it leaves the ridge. Let the surface z=0z = 0 be held at temperature T0T_0 for t>0t > 0. Then the heat equation ∂tT=κ ∂z2T\partial_t T = \kappa \, \partial_z^2 T with these data has the bounded solution T(z,t)=T0+(Tm−T0) erf⁡ ⁣(z2κt),T(z, t) = T_0 + (T_m - T_0) \, \operatorname{erf}\!\left( \frac{z}{2\sqrt{\kappa t}} \right), where erf⁡\operatorname{erf} is the error function. The surface heat flow is q(t)=k ∂zT(0,t)=k(Tm−T0)πκt.q(t) = k \, \partial_z T(0, t) = \frac{k (T_m - T_0)}{\sqrt{\pi \kappa t}}.

Remarks

Proof idea: the problem has no length scale, so the solution depends only on the similarity variable η=z/(2κt)\eta = z/(2\sqrt{\kappa t}). The heat equation becomes f′′+2ηf′=0f'' + 2\eta f' = 0, whose solution with f(0)=0f(0) = 0 and f(∞)=1f(\infty) = 1 is erf⁡\operatorname{erf}. If the plate spreads from the ridge at constant speed uu, then t=x/ut = x/u at distance xx from the ridge. Let the rock have density ρm\rho_m at TmT_m and thermal expansion coefficient α\alpha, and let water have density ρw\rho_w. If the cooled column is in isostatic balance, the seafloor sinks below the ridge depth by w(t)=2ρmα(Tm−T0)ρm−ρwκtπ,w(t) = \frac{2 \rho_m \alpha (T_m - T_0)}{\rho_m - \rho_w} \sqrt{\frac{\kappa t}{\pi}}, using the complementary error function integral ∫0∞erfc⁡(s) ds=1/π\int_0^\infty \operatorname{erfc}(s) \, ds = 1/\sqrt{\pi}. So depth and heat flow vary as t\sqrt{t} and 1/t1/\sqrt{t}, which matches observations for young seafloor; older seafloor flattens, which suggests a plate of finite thickness. The surface value of the geothermal gradient is q(t)/kq(t)/k.

Going deeper

For a student

The model is the basic link between plate tectonics and heat flow. It is the classical solution of the heat equation in a half-space with a step change of surface temperature. The same solution appears in Kelvin's estimate of the age of the Earth. Fitting the t\sqrt{t} law to bathymetry gives an estimate of the product α(Tm−T0)\alpha (T_m - T_0). The departure of old seafloor from the law is explained by the plate model, which adds a bottom boundary at fixed temperature.
