Hall basis
Definition
Let be a set, and let be the free magma on . Its elements are the binary trees with leaves labelled by . A tree that is not a single leaf is a pair of a left and a right subtree. A Hall set on is a subset with a total order such that:
- .
- If , then and .
- A tree lies in if and only if , , and either or with .
Let be a field and let be the free Lie algebra over on . For let be given by for and . The Hall basis attached to is the family . A standard theorem states that for every Hall set this family is a basis of as a vector space.
Remarks
Example: let . There is a Hall set on whose elements of degree at most are, in increasing order, . The tree satisfies clause 3 since and , and clause 2 since . The tree satisfies clause 3 since and the right subtree of satisfies . The basis elements of degree at most are , , , and .
Non-example: the tree is not in this Hall set, because fails in clause 3. This matches the relation , which makes redundant.
Some texts use the mirror-image convention, with and the order reversed. The set of Lyndon words with their standard bracketing, ordered lexicographically, is a Hall set; it gives the Lyndon basis.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
