Hamburger moment problem
Problem
Let be a sequence of real numbers. Decide whether there is a positive Borel measure on the real line such that is -integrable and The numbers are then the moments of .
Remarks
The existence question is solved. Hamburger proved that such a measure exists if and only if, for every , the Hankel matrix is positive semidefinite. Equivalently, for all and all real numbers , since this sum is when exists. Unlike the Hausdorff moment problem on , the measure need not be unique. The moment problem is called determinate when it is unique. Carleman's condition is sufficient for uniqueness. The moments of the standard normal distribution satisfy it, so that distribution is determined by its moments. The log-normal distribution is a classical example whose moments do not determine it.
