Hamilton's principal function

Summary

Fix a starting point and a starting time. Hamilton's principal function S(q,t)S(q, t) is the action of the true motion from there to the position qq at the time tt. As a function of the endpoint, it solves the Hamilton–Jacobi equation ∂tS+H(q,∇qS,t)=0\partial_t S + H(q, \nabla_q S, t) = 0. Its gradient in qq is the final momentum, so the single function SS encodes a whole family of motions. In many texts, the name also covers a complete solution of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation used as a generating function. See the definition.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
