Definition

Let L(q,q˙,t)L(q, \dot q, t) be a Lagrangian of class C2C^2 on U×ℝn×IU \times \R^n \times I, with U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n and I⊆ℝI \subseteq \R open. Fix q0∈Uq_0 \in U and t0∈It_0 \in I, and let W⊆U×IW \subseteq U \times I be an open set of points (q,t)(q, t) with t>t0t > t_0. Assume that for each (q,t)∈W(q, t) \in W there is a unique solution γq,t ⁣:[t0,t]→U\gamma_{q, t} \colon [t_0, t] \to U of the Lagrange equations of LL with γq,t(t0)=q0\gamma_{q, t}(t_0) = q_0 and γq,t(t)=q\gamma_{q, t}(t) = q. Assume also that γq,t(s)\gamma_{q, t}(s) is of class C2C^2 in (q,t,s)(q, t, s). Hamilton's principal function is the function S ⁣:W→ℝS \colon W \to \R given by the action S(q,t)=∫t0tL(γq,t(s),γ˙q,t(s),s) ds.S(q, t) = \int_{t_0}^{t} L\big(\gamma_{q, t}(s), \dot \gamma_{q, t}(s), s\big) \, ds.

Remarks

Assume that LL is hyperregular, with Hamiltonian HH. Let pp be the momentum of γq,t\gamma_{q, t} at time tt. The first variation of the action with free endpoint gives ∇qS(q,t)=p\nabla_q S(q, t) = p and ∂tS(q,t)=−H(q,p,t)\partial_t S(q, t) = -H(q, p, t). Hence SS solves the Hamilton–Jacobi equation ∂tS+H(q,∇qS,t)=0\partial_t S + H(q, \nabla_q S, t) = 0.

Example: for L=12mq˙2L = \frac{1}{2} m \dot q^2 with n=1n = 1, the path is γ(s)=q0+(q−q0)(s−t0)/(t−t0)\gamma(s) = q_0 + (q - q_0)(s - t_0)/(t - t_0), and S(q,t)=m(q−q0)22(t−t0).S(q, t) = \frac{m (q - q_0)^2}{2 (t - t_0)}. Check: ∂tS=−m(q−q0)22(t−t0)2\partial_t S = -\frac{m (q - q_0)^2}{2 (t - t_0)^2} and 12m(∂qS)2=m(q−q0)22(t−t0)2\frac{1}{2m} (\partial_q S)^2 = \frac{m (q - q_0)^2}{2 (t - t_0)^2}, so ∂tS+12m(∂qS)2=0\partial_t S + \frac{1}{2m} (\partial_q S)^2 = 0.

Non-example: for the oscillator L=12q˙2−12q2L = \frac{1}{2} \dot q^2 - \frac{1}{2} q^2, every solution starting at q0q_0 at t0t_0 is at −q0-q_0 at time t0+πt_0 + \pi. So for t=t0+πt = t_0 + \pi there is no solution ending at q≠−q0q \ne -q_0 and infinitely many ending at −q0-q_0, and SS is not defined near such points.
