Handle decomposition
Definition
Let and , and let be the closed unit ball of . An -dimensional -handle is ; its attaching region is . Let be a smooth -dimensional manifold with boundary, and let be a smooth embedding onto a submanifold of . The result of attaching a -handle to along is . It is the union of and with and identified, with corners smoothed. Let be a compact smooth -manifold, possibly with boundary. A handle decomposition of is a finite chain of smooth manifolds with boundary. Each must be obtained from by attaching one handle, up to diffeomorphism.
Remarks
The first step attaches a -handle to the empty set, whose attaching region is empty. A relative version starts from for a part of the boundary instead of the empty set; this is the form used for cobordisms. Example: the sphere has a handle decomposition with one -handle and one -handle: the northern and southern hemispheres, glued along the equator . Non-example: gluing a second disc to along a single arc of its boundary circle is not a handle attachment. In dimension the attaching region of a -handle is , two disjoint arcs. That of a -handle is the whole circle , and that of a -handle is empty; none of them is a single arc. If is a Morse function with critical values in , then each critical point of index gives one -handle in a handle decomposition of relative to .
