Problem
A finite set of points in the plane is in general position if no three of its points lie on a line. For an integer , let be the least integer with the following property. Every set of points in the plane in general position contains points that are the vertices of a convex polygon. The problem asks for the value of . Erdős and Szekeres conjectured that for every .
Remarks
Erdős and Szekeres proved that exists, using Ramsey's theorem in one of their proofs. They also proved the lower bound by a construction. The known values are , , and , all equal to . The value was established with a computer search by Szekeres and Peters. Suk proved in 2017 that . The conjecture is open for .
History
The case was posed by Esther Klein. The name comes from the marriage of Klein and George Szekeres, who met through this problem.
