Hardy inequality in Sobolev spaces
Builds on Sobolev spaceHardy's inequalityLp space
Statement
Let and . Then every continuously differentiable function with compact support satisfies
Remarks
For and there is a short proof. Let and expand . The cross term is by integration by parts, since . Collecting terms gives , which is the statement.
The constant is the best possible, but there is no nonzero function for which equality holds. By density, the inequality extends to every in the Sobolev space . It is the -dimensional analogue of the one-dimensional Hardy's inequality.
The hypothesis is needed. For , take smooth with compact support and : then is not integrable near , while the right side is finite.

For a student
Hardy's inequality controls singular potentials by kinetic energy. In quantum mechanics it shows that the operator on is bounded below when . In partial differential equations it is used to treat lower-order terms with singular coefficients and to study equations with critical singular weights.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
