Harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces Concept
Hardy–Littlewood maximal function
Summary
Let be a locally integrable function on . Its Hardy–Littlewood maximal function gives at each point the largest average of over balls centred there. It dominates almost everywhere and controls all local averages of at once. The maximal operator is bounded on for and of weak type . These bounds give the Lebesgue differentiation theorem and are a basic tool in harmonic analysis.
