Harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces Definition
Hardy–Littlewood maximal function
Definition
Let , let be Lebesgue measure on , and let be locally integrable. For and , let be the open ball of centre and radius . The Hardy–Littlewood maximal function of is the function given by
Remarks
Example: let and , and let . For the average is . For the average is , which increases with and tends to . For the average is . So .
Non-example of integrability: this shows that need not be integrable even when is, since . In fact is integrable on only when almost everywhere.
Variants use balls containing instead of balls centred at (the uncentred maximal function), or cubes instead of balls. They are comparable to up to constants depending on .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
