Description

Let n≥1n \ge 1. A box in ℝn\R^n is a product R=[a1,b1]×⋯×[an,bn]R = [a_1, b_1] \times \cdots \times [a_n, b_n] with ai≤bia_i \le b_i, and its volume is vol⁡(R)=(b1−a1)⋯(bn−an)\operatorname{vol}(R) = (b_1 - a_1) \cdots (b_n - a_n). Lebesgue outer measure on Euclidean space ℝn\R^n is λ∗(A)=inf⁡{∑k=1∞vol⁡(Rk):R1,R2,… boxes, A⊆⋃kRk}for A⊆ℝn.\lambda^*(A) = \inf \Big\{ \sum_{k=1}^{\infty} \operatorname{vol}(R_k) : R_1, R_2, \ldots \text{ boxes}, \ A \subseteq \bigcup_{k} R_k \Big\} \quad \text{for } A \subseteq \R^n. A set E⊆ℝnE \subseteq \R^n is Lebesgue measurable if λ∗(A)=λ∗(A∩E)+λ∗(A∖E)\lambda^*(A) = \lambda^*(A \cap E) + \lambda^*(A \setminus E) for all A⊆ℝnA \subseteq \R^n. Lebesgue measure λ\lambda (or λn\lambda^n) is λ∗\lambda^* restricted to the Lebesgue measurable sets.

Remarks

By Carathéodory's criterion the Lebesgue measurable sets form a σ\sigma-algebra and λ\lambda is a complete measure on it. Every Borel set is Lebesgue measurable, and λ(R)=vol⁡(R)\lambda(R) = \operatorname{vol}(R) for every box RR; so λ([a,b])=b−a\lambda([a, b]) = b - a on ℝ\R. Lebesgue measure is invariant under translations and rotations, and λ(tA)=∣t∣nλ(A)\lambda(tA) = \abs{t}^n \lambda(A) for t∈ℝt \in \R. Up to a constant factor, it is the only translation-invariant measure on the Borel sets of ℝn\R^n that is finite on bounded sets. Every countable set has measure 00, and so does the Cantor set, which is uncountable. Lebesgue measurable sets are regular: for every measurable EE and ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there are a closed set FF and an open set UU with F⊆E⊆UF \subseteq E \subseteq U and λ(U∖F)<ε\lambda(U \setminus F) < \varepsilon. Not every subset of ℝn\R^n is Lebesgue measurable; a Vitali set is an example.
