Definition

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a metric space, and let diam⁡U\operatorname{diam} U be the diameter of a set U⊆XU \subseteq X. Let s≥0s \ge 0, with the convention (diam⁡U)0=1(\operatorname{diam} U)^0 = 1 for every UU. For A⊆XA \subseteq X and δ>0\delta > 0, let ℋδs(A)=inf⁡{∑i=1∞(diam⁡Ui)s:A⊆⋃i=1∞Ui, diam⁡Ui≤δ},\mathcal{H}^s_\delta(A) = \inf \set{ \sum_{i=1}^\infty (\operatorname{diam} U_i)^s : A \subseteq \bigcup_{i=1}^\infty U_i, \ \operatorname{diam} U_i \le \delta }, where the infimum runs over all countable covers of AA by sets Ui⊆XU_i \subseteq X of diameter at most δ\delta. The ss-dimensional Hausdorff measure of AA is ℋs(A)=lim⁡δ→0ℋδs(A)=sup⁡δ>0ℋδs(A).\mathcal{H}^s(A) = \lim_{\delta \to 0} \mathcal{H}^s_\delta(A) = \sup_{\delta > 0} \mathcal{H}^s_\delta(A).

Remarks

The limit exists in [0,∞][0, \infty] because ℋδs(A)\mathcal{H}^s_\delta(A) grows as δ\delta decreases. The map ℋs\mathcal{H}^s is a metric outer measure, so all Borel sets are measurable and its restriction to them is a measure. Some authors multiply by a constant so that ℋn\mathcal{H}^n equals Lebesgue measure on ℝn\R^n; without it, ℋn\mathcal{H}^n is a constant multiple of Lebesgue measure.

Example: ℋ0\mathcal{H}^0 is counting measure. On ℝ\R, ℋ1\mathcal{H}^1 is Lebesgue measure: covers by intervals realize the infimum, and the length of an interval is its diameter.

Non-example: the quantity without the limit δ→0\delta \to 0, the Hausdorff content ℋ∞s\mathcal{H}^s_\infty with no bound on diameters, is not a measure on Borel sets. In ℝ2\R^2 with s=1s = 1, the segments A=[0,1]×{0}A = [0, 1] \times \set{0} and B=[0,1]×{1}B = [0, 1] \times \set{1} each have content 11. But A∪BA \cup B lies in the unit square, of diameter 2\sqrt 2, so its content is at most 2<2\sqrt 2 < 2.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
