Problem
Let . Is there a function , defined on all subsets of , with values in , such that:
- is finitely additive: for disjoint .
- is invariant under isometries: for every isometry of , such as a translation or a rotation.
- .
Remarks
Such a function is a finitely additive measure on the power set. The countably additive version has a negative answer, by the Vitali set. Hausdorff showed with his paradox on the sphere that the answer is negative for . Banach showed in 1923 that the answer is positive for and ; such a function can even be chosen to agree with Lebesgue measure on Lebesgue measurable sets. These functions are called Banach measures, and they are not unique. The difference between the dimensions is explained by amenability. The isometry groups of and are amenable, and the rotation group of contains a free group on two generators.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
