Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let λ∗\lambda^* be Lebesgue outer measure on Euclidean space ℝn\R^n. That is, λ∗(A)\lambda^*(A) is the infimum of ∑kvol⁡(Rk)\sum_k \operatorname{vol}(R_k) over all countable covers of AA by open boxes RkR_k. Call E⊆ℝnE \subseteq \R^n Lebesgue measurable if for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is an open set U⊇EU \supseteq E with λ∗(U∖E)<ε\lambda^*(U \setminus E) < \varepsilon. Then EE is Lebesgue measurable if and only if λ∗(A)=λ∗(A∩E)+λ∗(A∖E)for every A⊆ℝn.\lambda^*(A) = \lambda^*(A \cap E) + \lambda^*(A \setminus E) \quad \text{for every } A \subseteq \R^n.

Remarks

The inequality ≤\le always holds by subadditivity, so only ≥\ge has content, and only for AA with λ∗(A)<∞\lambda^*(A) < \infty. If EE is Lebesgue measurable, approximate EE from outside by an open set, and use that open sets split every AA additively. Conversely, apply the splitting identity to bounded parts of EE and to open covers chosen close to λ∗\lambda^*. For example, a closed box EE splits every AA additively, in line with its being measurable. The criterion is useful because the splitting condition makes sense for any outer measure μ∗\mu^* on any set XX. For any outer measure, the sets EE with μ∗(A)=μ∗(A∩E)+μ∗(A∖E)\mu^*(A) = \mu^*(A \cap E) + \mu^*(A \setminus E) for all A⊆XA \subseteq X form a σ\sigma-algebra, and μ∗\mu^* restricted to it is a complete measure.

For a student

In a measure theory course this splitting condition is often taken as the definition of a measurable set. With it, Carathéodory's construction turns an outer measure into a complete measure; this gives Lebesgue measure, Lebesgue–Stieltjes measures and Hausdorff measures. The same construction is the heart of the proof of the Carathéodory extension theorem. The theorem above shows that for ℝn\R^n this abstract notion agrees with the geometric one of approximation by open sets.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
