Definition
Let be a set and let be its power set. An outer measure on is a map , with values in the extended real line, such that:
- .
- If , then .
- For every sequence of subsets of ,
Remarks
Example: Lebesgue outer measure on is the infimum over all countable covers of by open intervals. Clause 1 holds since is covered by intervals of arbitrarily small total length. Clause 2 holds since a cover of also covers . Clause 3 follows by covering each within of . Non-example: on , the map with , and is monotone, but it fails clause 3 because . Some authors, such as Federer, call outer measures simply measures. The outer measures defined here are the ones to which Carathéodory's criterion applies.
