Extended real number line

Description

The extended real number line is the set R‾=R∪{−∞,+∞}\overline{\mathbb{R}} = \mathbb{R} \cup \{-\infty, +\infty\}. It has two new elements, −∞-\infty and +∞+\infty, that are not real numbers. Its order extends the order of R\mathbb{R}, with −∞<x<+∞-\infty < x < +\infty for each real number xx.

Remarks

In R‾\overline{\mathbb{R}}, each subset has a supremum and an infimum. For example, sup⁡N=+∞\sup \mathbb{N} = +\infty and sup⁡∅=−∞\sup \emptyset = -\infty. Some operations extend: x+∞=+∞x + \infty = +\infty for each real xx. Other expressions, such as ∞−∞\infty - \infty, stay undefined. The set R‾\overline{\mathbb{R}} is not a field.

Explanations

L1 human

The extended real line adds two end points to the number line, one at each end. This lets you write lim⁡x→∞\lim_{x \to \infty} and sup⁡\sup of unbounded sets with symbols instead of words.

What this node needs for W2
  • section Invariants: a table of the main invariants (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
