Supremum
Definition
Let be a partially ordered set and let be a subset of . An element of is a supremum, or least upper bound, of when these two conditions hold:
- is an upper bound of ;
- if is an upper bound of , then .
The notation is .
Remarks
A set has at most one supremum, see uniqueness of the supremum. In , and . The first set does not contain its supremum. In , the set is bounded above but has no supremum.
Explanations
L1 human
The supremum is the lowest possible ceiling for a set. For the set , every number at least is a ceiling, and is the lowest of these, so the supremum is .
What this node needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
What this needs
To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.
