Branch of the logarithm

Definition

Let UU be an open subset of C∖{0}\mathbb{C} \setminus \{0\}. A branch of the logarithm on UU is a continuous function L:U→CL : U \to \mathbb{C} such that eL(z)=ze^{L(z)} = z for each z∈Uz \in U. Thus L(z)L(z) is a complex logarithm of zz for each z∈Uz \in U.

Remarks

Each branch LL of the logarithm on UU is holomorphic on UU, with L′(z)=1/zL'(z) = 1/z. If UU is a domain and L1,L2L_1, L_2 are two branches on UU, then L1−L2L_1 - L_2 is the constant 2πik2 \pi i k for one k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}. There is no branch of the logarithm on C∖{0}\mathbb{C} \setminus \{0\}, or on any open set that contains a circle with center 00. The principal branch Log⁡\operatorname{Log} is a branch on C∖(−∞,0]\mathbb{C} \setminus (-\infty, 0]. The functions Log⁡z+2πik\operatorname{Log} z + 2 \pi i k with k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z} are the other branches on this set.

Explanations

L1 human

The logarithm has many values at each point, so to get a function we must choose one value at each point, and the choice must change continuously. Such a choice is a branch. If you go once around 00, the argument grows by 2π2\pi, so no continuous choice is possible on a full circle around 00.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 13 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
