Argument of a complex number

Definition

Let zz be a complex number with z≠0z \neq 0, and let ∣z∣|z| be its modulus. An argument of zz is a real number θ\theta with z=∣z∣(cos⁡θ+isin⁡θ).z = |z| (\cos \theta + i \sin \theta). The notation arg⁡z\arg z means the set of all arguments of zz, or one chosen argument.

Remarks

If θ\theta is an argument of zz, then the arguments of zz are exactly the numbers θ+2πk\theta + 2 \pi k with k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}. The number 00 has no argument in this sense. Some conventions set arg⁡0=0\arg 0 = 0. For example, the arguments of ii are π/2+2πk\pi/2 + 2 \pi k, and those of −1-1 are π+2πk\pi + 2 \pi k.

Explanations

L1 human

The argument says in which direction a complex number points from 00. The number 1+i1 + i points at 4545 degrees, so π/4\pi/4 is an argument of it. A full turn brings you back to the same direction, so adding 2π2\pi gives another argument.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
