statement theorem

Arguments add under multiplication

Statement

Let zz and ww be complex numbers with z≠0z \neq 0 and w≠0w \neq 0. If θ\theta is an argument of zz and φ\varphi is an argument of ww, then θ+φ\theta + \varphi is an argument of zwz w. Thus arg⁡(zw)≡arg⁡z+arg⁡w(mod2π)\arg(z w) \equiv \arg z + \arg w \pmod{2 \pi}.

Remarks

Proof: write z=∣z∣eiθz = |z| e^{i \theta} and w=∣w∣eiφw = |w| e^{i \varphi}. Then zw=∣z∣∣w∣ei(θ+φ)z w = |z| |w| e^{i (\theta + \varphi)} by the product of exponentials. For the principal values, the equality can fail. For example, Arg⁡(−1)+Arg⁡(−1)=2π\operatorname{Arg}(-1) + \operatorname{Arg}(-1) = 2\pi, but Arg⁡((−1)(−1))=0\operatorname{Arg}((-1)(-1)) = 0.

Explanations

L1 human

When you multiply two complex numbers, the angles add. For example, ii points at 9090 degrees, and i⋅i=−1i \cdot i = -1 points at 180180 degrees.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
