statement theorem

Existence of square roots of nonnegative reals

Statement

Let xx be a real number with x≥0x \ge 0. Then there is exactly one real number yy with y≥0y \ge 0 and y2=xy^2 = x.

Remarks

Existence uses the completeness axiom: take y=sup⁡{t≥0:t2≤x}y = \sup \{t \ge 0 : t^2 \le x\} and show that y2<xy^2 < x and y2>xy^2 > x are both impossible. Uniqueness: if y,z≥0y, z \ge 0 and y2=z2y^2 = z^2, then (y−z)(y+z)=0(y - z)(y + z) = 0, thus y=zy = z. In Q\mathbb{Q} the existence fails: 22 has no rational square root, by the irrationality of the square root of 2.

Explanations

L1 human

Every nonnegative real number is the area of exactly one square, and the side of that square is the square root. This needs the real numbers: among the fractions, no square has area exactly 22.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this
