Isolated singularity

Definition

Let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} and let ff be a complex function. The point cc is an isolated singularity of ff if there is r>0r > 0 such that ff is defined and holomorphic on the punctured disc {z:0<∣z−c∣<r}\{z : 0 < |z - c| < r\}. The value of ff at cc, if there is one, plays no role.

Remarks

Each isolated singularity is of exactly one of three types: removable, a pole, or essential. For example, 00 is an isolated singularity of 1/z1/z, of sin⁡zz\frac{\sin z}{z} and of e1/ze^{1/z}. The point 00 is not an isolated singularity of 1sin⁡(1/z)\frac{1}{\sin(1/z)}, because the poles 1kπ\frac{1}{k\pi} accumulate at 00. It is not an isolated singularity of Log⁡z\operatorname{Log} z either, because Log⁡\operatorname{Log} is not holomorphic on any punctured disc around 00.

Explanations

L1 human

An isolated singularity is a single bad point of a function, with only good points around it. The function is holomorphic on a small disc around the point, with only the center removed.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
