statement theorem

Casorati–Weierstrass theorem

Statement

Let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C}, let r>0r > 0, and let ff be holomorphic on the punctured disc 0<∣z−c∣<r0 < |z - c| < r. Assume that cc is an essential singularity of ff. Then for each δ\delta with 0<δ<r0 < \delta < r, the image f({z:0<∣z−c∣<δ})f(\{z : 0 < |z - c| < \delta\}) is dense in C\mathbb{C}. Thus for each w∈Cw \in \mathbb{C} there is a sequence zn→cz_n \to c with zn≠cz_n \neq c and f(zn)→wf(z_n) \to w.

Remarks

Proof idea: if the image of a punctured disc misses a disc ∣w−w0∣<ε|w - w_0| < \varepsilon, then g(z)=1/(f(z)−w0)g(z) = 1/(f(z) - w_0) is bounded near cc. By Riemann's theorem, gg is holomorphic at cc, and then cc is removable or a pole of ff. Picard's great theorem is a much stronger statement. In the Russian literature, the theorem has the name of Sokhotski.

Explanations

L1 human

Near an essential singularity, the function comes as close as you like to each complex number. For example, e1/ze^{1/z} comes close to 55, to −i-i and to 00 on each small disc around 00.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 17 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
