Complex differentiability

Definition

Let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be an open set, let f:U→Cf : U \to \mathbb{C} be a function, and let z0∈Uz_0 \in U. The function ff is complex differentiable at z0z_0 if the limit f′(z0)=lim⁡h→0f(z0+h)−f(z0)hf'(z_0) = \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(z_0 + h) - f(z_0)}{h} exists in C\mathbb{C}. Here hh runs through the nonzero complex numbers with z0+h∈Uz_0 + h \in U. The number f′(z0)f'(z_0) is the complex derivative of ff at z0z_0. The limit means: for each ε>0\varepsilon > 0 there is δ>0\delta > 0 such that ∣f(z0+h)−f(z0)h−f′(z0)∣<ε\left| \frac{f(z_0 + h) - f(z_0)}{h} - f'(z_0) \right| < \varepsilon for all such hh with 0<∣h∣<δ0 < |h| < \delta.

Remarks

For example, f(z)=z2f(z) = z^2 is complex differentiable at each z0z_0 with f′(z0)=2z0f'(z_0) = 2 z_0, because (z0+h)2−z02h=2z0+h\frac{(z_0 + h)^2 - z_0^2}{h} = 2 z_0 + h. The number hh can go to 00 from each direction in the plane. This makes the condition much stronger than real differentiability, see the conjugate is not holomorphic. If ff is complex differentiable at z0z_0, then ff is continuous at z0z_0. The Cauchy–Riemann equations describe complex differentiability with partial derivatives.

Explanations

L1 human

The definition is the same as the definition of the derivative of a real function, but hh is now a complex number. The quotient must have the same limit when hh goes to 00 along the real axis, along the imaginary axis, or along any other path.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
