statement theorem
Cauchy–Riemann equations
Statement
Let be an open set and let be a function. Identify with by . Let and be the real and imaginary parts of , as real functions of on . Let . Then is complex differentiable at if and only if the following two conditions hold. First, and are differentiable at as functions of two real variables. Second, they satisfy at . In this case .
Remarks
For we have and . Then and . The real differentiability of and is necessary. The function , satisfies the two equations at , but is not complex differentiable at . The two equations together are the one complex equation .
Explanations
L1 human
A complex derivative must be the same in each direction. If you compare the derivative along the real axis with the derivative along the imaginary axis, you get the two equations. So the equations are a test with partial derivatives for a complex derivative. For example, has and , so it fails the test.
