Maximum modulus principle

Statement

Let D⊆CD \subseteq \mathbb{C} be a domain and let f:D→Cf : D \to \mathbb{C} be holomorphic on DD. Assume that ∣f∣|f| has a local maximum at a point z0∈Dz_0 \in D: there is r>0r > 0 such that ∣f(z)∣≤∣f(z0)∣|f(z)| \le |f(z_0)| for each zz with ∣z−z0∣<r|z - z_0| < r. Then ff is constant on DD.

Remarks

Proof idea: the mean value formula f(z0)=12π∫02πf(z0+ρeiθ) dθf(z_0) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} f(z_0 + \rho e^{i\theta}) \, d\theta for small ρ\rho forces ∣f∣=∣f(z0)∣|f| = |f(z_0)| near z0z_0. Then ff is constant near z0z_0, and on DD by the identity theorem. Corollary: if DD is bounded and ff is continuous on the closure D‾\overline{D} and holomorphic on DD, then max⁡D‾∣f∣\max_{\overline{D}} |f| is attained at a point of the boundary of DD. The minimum of ∣f∣|f| can be inside DD, but only at a zero of ff. For example, ∣z∣|z| has its minimum on the unit disc at 00.

Explanations

L1 human

The size ∣f∣|f| of a nonconstant holomorphic function has no highest point inside its domain. For example, on the closed unit disc, ∣z2+1∣|z^2 + 1| is largest on the boundary circle, at z=±1z = \pm 1, and it equals 22 there.
