Cauchy's integral formula

Statement

Let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be an open set and let f:U→Cf : U \to \mathbb{C} be holomorphic on UU. Let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} and r>0r > 0 be such that the closed disc {z:∣z−c∣≤r}\{z : |z - c| \le r\} is contained in UU. Then for each a∈Ca \in \mathbb{C} with ∣a−c∣<r|a - c| < r, f(a)=12πi∮∣z−c∣=rf(z)z−a dz,f(a) = \frac{1}{2 \pi i} \oint_{|z - c| = r} \frac{f(z)}{z - a} \, dz, where the integral is the circle integral over the circle ∣z−c∣=r|z - c| = r.

Remarks

The values of ff on the circle determine the values of ff at each point inside the circle. With a=ca = c and z=c+reiθz = c + r e^{i\theta}, the formula gives f(c)=12π∫02πf(c+reiθ) dθf(c) = \frac{1}{2\pi} \int_0^{2\pi} f(c + r e^{i\theta}) \, d\theta. So f(c)f(c) is the average of ff on the circle. For f=1f = 1, the formula is the integral of 1/(z - a). The formula gives the formula for the derivatives, and it shows that holomorphic functions are analytic.

Explanations

L1 human

If you know a holomorphic function on a circle, you know it everywhere inside the circle. The formula computes the value at an inside point aa as a weighted average of the values on the circle, with the weight 1/(z−a)1/(z - a).

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
