Cauchy's estimates

Statement

Let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be an open set and let f:U→Cf : U \to \mathbb{C} be holomorphic on UU. Let c∈Cc \in \mathbb{C} and r>0r > 0 be such that the closed disc {z:∣z−c∣≤r}\{z : |z - c| \le r\} is contained in UU. Let M≥0M \ge 0 be a real number with ∣f(z)∣≤M|f(z)| \le M for each zz with ∣z−c∣=r|z - c| = r. Then for each integer n≥0n \ge 0, ∣f(n)(c)∣≤n! Mrn.|f^{(n)}(c)| \le \frac{n! \, M}{r^n}.

Remarks

Proof: apply the estimation lemma to the formula for the derivatives with a=ca = c. The circle has length 2πr2 \pi r, and ∣f(z)/(z−c)n+1∣≤M/rn+1|f(z) / (z - c)^{n+1}| \le M / r^{n+1} on it. For n=1n = 1, the estimate is ∣f′(c)∣≤M/r|f'(c)| \le M / r. If f(z)=∑an(z−c)nf(z) = \sum a_n (z - c)^n is the Taylor series, the estimate is ∣an∣≤M/rn|a_n| \le M / r^n.

Explanations

L1 human

If a holomorphic function is small on a circle, then its derivatives at the center cannot be large. A larger circle with the same bound MM gives a better bound for the derivatives. This is the idea of Liouville's theorem.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
