concept

Complex plane

Summary

The complex plane is the plane R2\mathbb{R}^2 in which the point (a,b)(a, b) represents the complex number a+bia + b i. The horizontal axis is the real axis and the vertical axis is the imaginary axis. In this picture, addition of complex numbers is addition of vectors. The modulus ∣z∣|z| is the distance from zz to 00, and the argument of zz is the angle from the positive real axis to zz.

Remarks

Multiplication by a complex number w≠0w \neq 0 scales the plane by ∣w∣|w| and turns it by the argument of ww. The complex conjugate is the reflection in the real axis.

Explanations

L1 human

Draw the real numbers on a horizontal line, and draw the multiples of ii on a vertical line through 00. Then each complex number is a point of the plane: 3+2i3 + 2 i is three steps to the right and two steps up.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
