Möbius transformation

Definition

Let a,b,c,da, b, c, d be complex numbers with ad−bc≠0ad - bc \neq 0. The Möbius transformation with these coefficients is the map f:C^→C^f : \widehat{\mathbb{C}} \to \widehat{\mathbb{C}} of the Riemann sphere to itself given by f(z)=az+bcz+df(z) = \frac{az + b}{cz + d} for each z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C} with cz+d≠0cz + d \neq 0. The map also has the following values. If c≠0c \neq 0, then f(−d/c)=∞f(-d/c) = \infty and f(∞)=a/cf(\infty) = a/c. If c=0c = 0, then f(∞)=∞f(\infty) = \infty.

Remarks

Each Möbius transformation is a bijection of C^\widehat{\mathbb{C}}, and its inverse is the Möbius transformation w↦dw−b−cw+aw \mapsto \frac{dw - b}{-cw + a}. The Möbius transformations form a group under composition, the Möbius group. The coefficients (λa,λb,λc,λd)(\lambda a, \lambda b, \lambda c, \lambda d) with λ≠0\lambda \neq 0 give the same map. If ad−bc=0ad - bc = 0, the formula gives a constant or is undefined, so it is not a Möbius transformation.

Explanations

L1 human

A Möbius transformation is a quotient of two linear functions of zz. Examples are z↦z+1z \mapsto z + 1, z↦2zz \mapsto 2z and z↦1zz \mapsto \frac{1}{z}, and each Möbius transformation is a composition of maps of these simple types. The point ∞\infty is necessary, because the denominator can be zero.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
