Riemann sphere

Definition

The Riemann sphere, or extended complex plane, is the set C^=C∪{∞}\widehat{\mathbb{C}} = \mathbb{C} \cup \{\infty\}, where C\mathbb{C} is the set of complex numbers and ∞\infty is one new point. Its topology is as follows. A set V⊆C^V \subseteq \widehat{\mathbb{C}} is open if the following two conditions hold. First, V∩CV \cap \mathbb{C} is open in the complex plane. Second, in the case ∞∈V\infty \in V, VV also contains the set {z∈C:∣z∣>R}\{ z \in \mathbb{C} : |z| > R \} for some R>0R > 0. Let S2={(x1,x2,x3)∈R3:x12+x22+x32=1}S^2 = \{ (x_1, x_2, x_3) \in \mathbb{R}^3 : x_1^2 + x_2^2 + x_3^2 = 1 \} and N=(0,0,1)N = (0, 0, 1). The stereographic projection σ:S2→C^\sigma : S^2 \to \widehat{\mathbb{C}} is σ(x1,x2,x3)=x1+ix21−x3\sigma(x_1, x_2, x_3) = \frac{x_1 + i x_2}{1 - x_3} for points other than NN, and σ(N)=∞\sigma(N) = \infty. The map σ\sigma is a homeomorphism, so C^\widehat{\mathbb{C}} is a sphere as a topological space.

Remarks

A sequence (zn)(z_n) of complex numbers tends to ∞\infty in C^\widehat{\mathbb{C}} exactly when ∣zn∣→∞|z_n| \to \infty. Some arithmetic extends to ∞\infty: z+∞=∞z + \infty = \infty for z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C}, and z0=∞\frac{z}{0} = \infty and z∞=0\frac{z}{\infty} = 0 for z≠0z \neq 0, but the expressions ∞−∞\infty - \infty, 0⋅∞0 \cdot \infty, 00\frac{0}{0} and ∞∞\frac{\infty}{\infty} stay undefined. With the value ∞\infty at each pole, a meromorphic function on an open set UU becomes a continuous map from UU to C^\widehat{\mathbb{C}}. The Riemann sphere is a compact Riemann surface, with the two charts zz near points of C\mathbb{C} and 1z\frac{1}{z} near ∞\infty.

Explanations

L1 human

Imagine a ball that sits on the complex plane at 00. Draw a line from the top of the ball to a point of the plane; the line meets the ball at one more point. Points far from 00 go to points near the top, so the top of the ball plays the role of ∞\infty.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Complex numbers object
  2. Complex plane concept
  3. Riemann sphere definition

What depends on this

4 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
