statement theorem
Uniform limits of holomorphic functions are holomorphic
Statement
Let be an open set and let be functions that are holomorphic on . Let be a function such that uniformly on each compact subset of . Then is holomorphic on . Moreover, uniformly on each compact subset of .
Remarks
Proof idea: is continuous. On each disc in , Cauchy's integral theorem gives for each triangle , so by the uniform convergence, and Morera's theorem applies. A main use: if a series of holomorphic functions converges uniformly on compact subsets of , then its sum is holomorphic on . There is no real analogue. On , the polynomials converge uniformly to , which is not differentiable at .
Explanations
L1 human
If holomorphic functions get close to a function uniformly, then is holomorphic too, and their derivatives get close to the derivative of . This lets us build new holomorphic functions as limits of series, for example the zeta function .
