statement theorem

Cauchy's integral theorem

Statement

Let U⊆CU \subseteq \mathbb{C} be a simply connected open set. This means that UU is connected, and each closed path in UU can be continuously deformed in UU to a constant path. Let f:U→Cf : U \to \mathbb{C} be holomorphic on UU. Let γ:[a,b]→U\gamma : [a, b] \to U be a closed path that is continuous and piecewise continuously differentiable. Then the contour integral of ff along γ\gamma is ∮γf(z) dz=0.\oint_\gamma f(z) \, dz = 0.

Remarks

Open discs, open half-planes, C\mathbb{C} and each convex open set are simply connected. So the theorem holds on each of them. A special case: if ff is holomorphic on an open set that contains the closed disc ∣z−c∣≤R|z - c| \le R, then ∮∣z−c∣=Rf(z) dz=0\oint_{|z - c| = R} f(z) \, dz = 0. The hypothesis on UU is necessary. On C∖{0}\mathbb{C} \setminus \{0\}, the integral of 1/z over the unit circle is 2πi2 \pi i. It follows that the integral of ff along a path in UU depends only on the end points of the path.

Explanations

L1 human

The integral of a holomorphic function around a closed loop is zero, as long as the loop does not go around a hole of the domain. It is like walking around a hill and coming back to the start: the total change of height is zero.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
