statement theorem

Irrationality of the square root of 2

Statement

The square root 2\sqrt{2} of 22 is an irrational number. That is, there are no integers aa and bb with b≠0b \neq 0 and (a/b)2=2(a / b)^2 = 2.

Remarks

A classical proof: suppose that a/b=2a / b = \sqrt{2} in lowest terms. Then a2=2b2a^2 = 2 b^2, thus aa is even. Then bb is also even, which is a contradiction. The theorem is a special case of the irrationality of the square root of a prime.

History

The ancient Greeks knew this result. Tradition attributes its discovery to the Pythagoreans.

Explanations

No fraction squared gives exactly 22. Fractions such as 7/57/5 and 141/100141/100 come close, but there is always an error. This means that the diagonal of a square with side 11 has a length that is not a ratio of whole numbers.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
