Rational numbers

Description

A rational number is a number of the form a/ba / b, where aa and bb are integers and b≠0b \neq 0. We write Q\mathbb{Q} for the set of rational numbers. Two fractions a/ba / b and c/dc / d are the same rational number when ad=bca d = b c. With addition and multiplication, Q\mathbb{Q} is a field, and with its usual order it is an ordered field. The set Q\mathbb{Q} contains Z\mathbb{Z}, because each integer aa is the fraction a/1a / 1.

Remarks

Each rational number has exactly one representation in lowest terms a/ba / b with b>0b > 0. The set Q\mathbb{Q} is countable. Not every real number is rational: 2\sqrt{2} is irrational.

Explanations

L1 human

The rational numbers are the fractions, such as 1/21/2, −3/4-3/4 and 7=7/17 = 7/1. Many fractions name the same number: 1/21/2, 2/42/4 and 3/63/6 are all equal. In Q\mathbb{Q}, you can divide by any number except 00.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
