statement corollary

There is a natural number n with 1/n below any positive epsilon

Statement

Let ε\varepsilon be a real number with ε>0\varepsilon > 0. Then there is a natural number n≥1n \ge 1 with 1n<ε\dfrac{1}{n} < \varepsilon.

Remarks

Proof: since the reals are Archimedean, there is a natural number n>1/εn > 1/\varepsilon. Then n≥1n \ge 1 and 1/n<ε1/n < \varepsilon. Thus inf⁡{1/n:n≥1}=0\inf \{1/n : n \ge 1\} = 0. There are no positive infinitely small real numbers. The same holds in each Archimedean ordered field.

Explanations

L1 human

The fractions 1,1/2,1/3,…1, 1/2, 1/3, \dots get as small as you want. For ε=0.001\varepsilon = 0.001, the number n=1001n = 1001 works, because 1/1001<0.0011/1001 < 0.001.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 17 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
