statement proposition

Power series of the complex logarithm

Statement

Let Log⁡\operatorname{Log} be the principal branch of the logarithm. For each z∈Cz \in \mathbb{C} with ∣z∣<1|z| < 1, the series ∑n≥1zn/n\sum_{n \ge 1} z^n / n converges absolutely, and −Log⁡(1−z)=∑n=1∞znn=z+z22+z33+⋯ .-\operatorname{Log}(1 - z) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{z^n}{n} = z + \frac{z^2}{2} + \frac{z^3}{3} + \cdots.

Remarks

Replacing zz by −z-z gives Log⁡(1+z)=∑n≥1(−1)n+1zn/n\operatorname{Log}(1 + z) = \sum_{n \ge 1} (-1)^{n+1} z^n / n for ∣z∣<1|z| < 1. The radius of convergence is 11. For ∣z∣<1|z| < 1, the number 1−z1 - z has positive real part, so it is not on the branch cut. Proof idea: both sides vanish at 00, and both have the derivative 1/(1−z)=∑n≥0zn1/(1 - z) = \sum_{n \ge 0} z^n on the unit disc. At z=−1z = -1 the series still converges, and gives ln⁡2=1−12+13−⋯\ln 2 = 1 - \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{3} - \cdots.

Explanations

L1 human

Integrate the geometric series 1+z+z2+⋯=1/(1−z)1 + z + z^2 + \cdots = 1/(1 - z) term by term from 00 to zz. On the left you get z+z2/2+z3/3+⋯z + z^2/2 + z^3/3 + \cdots, and on the right you get −Log⁡(1−z)-\operatorname{Log}(1 - z).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 18 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
