Complex logarithm

Definition

Let zz be a complex number with z≠0z \neq 0. A complex logarithm of zz is a complex number ww with ew=ze^w = z, where ewe^w is the complex exponential of ww. The notation log⁡z\log z means the set of all complex logarithms of zz, or one chosen element of this set.

Remarks

Let ∣z∣|z| be the modulus of zz, let ln⁡\ln be the real natural logarithm, and let θ\theta be an argument of zz. Then the logarithms of zz are exactly the numbers ln⁡∣z∣+i(θ+2πk)\ln |z| + i (\theta + 2 \pi k) with k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}. The number 00 has no logarithm, because ew≠0e^w \neq 0 for each ww. So log⁡\log is a multivalued function on C∖{0}\mathbb{C} \setminus \{0\}. Its principal branch is Log⁡z=ln⁡∣z∣+iArg⁡z\operatorname{Log} z = \ln |z| + i \operatorname{Arg} z, with −π<Arg⁡z≤π-\pi < \operatorname{Arg} z \le \pi. For example, the logarithms of −1-1 are iπ(2k+1)i \pi (2k + 1) with k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}, and Log⁡(−1)=iπ\operatorname{Log}(-1) = i \pi.

Explanations

L1 human

A logarithm of zz is an answer to the question: ee to which power gives zz? Because ew+2πi=ewe^{w + 2\pi i} = e^w, each answer gives infinitely many other answers, spaced by 2πi2\pi i on a vertical line. The real part of each answer is ln⁡∣z∣\ln |z|, and the imaginary part is an angle of zz.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
