statement theorem

Euler's formula

Statement

For every complex number zz, eiz=cos⁡z+isin⁡z.e^{i z} = \cos z + i \sin z. Here ew=∑n=0∞wn/n!e^{w} = \sum_{n=0}^{\infty} w^n / n! is the complex exponential function, and cos⁡\cos and sin⁡\sin are given by their power series.

Remarks

The main case is a real number z=xz = x. Then cos⁡x\cos x and sin⁡x\sin x are the real and imaginary parts of eixe^{i x}, and ∣eix∣=1|e^{i x}| = 1. For x=πx = \pi, the formula gives Euler's identity. A proof compares the power series: the even terms of eize^{i z} give cos⁡z\cos z and the odd terms give isin⁡zi \sin z.

Explanations

L1 human

As the real number xx grows, the point eixe^{i x} moves around the unit circle at constant speed. Its coordinates are cos⁡x\cos x and sin⁡x\sin x, as in trigonometry. The formula links the exponential function with the trigonometric functions.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
