Forced oscillation and resonance

Example

Let ω0>0\omega_0 > 0, ζ≥0\zeta \ge 0, F>0F > 0 and ω>0\omega > 0 be constants. The forced oscillator is x′′+2ζω0 x′+ω02 x=Fcos⁡(ωt).x'' + 2 \zeta \omega_0\, x' + \omega_0^2\, x = F \cos(\omega t). If ζ>0\zeta > 0, it has the particular solution xp(t)=a(ω)cos⁡(ωt−δ)x_p(t) = a(\omega) \cos(\omega t - \delta) for a phase δ\delta, with amplitude a(ω)=F(ω02−ω2)2+(2ζω0ω)2.a(\omega) = \frac{F}{\sqrt{\left(\omega_0^2 - \omega^2\right)^2 + \left(2 \zeta \omega_0 \omega\right)^2}}. Each solution is xpx_p plus a solution of the damped equation, which tends to 00. So xpx_p is the steady state. If ζ=0\zeta = 0 and ω=ω0\omega = \omega_0, a particular solution is xp(t)=F2ω0 tsin⁡(ω0t)x_p(t) = \frac{F}{2 \omega_0}\, t \sin(\omega_0 t), which is unbounded. This is resonance.

Remarks

For 0<ζ<1/20 < \zeta < 1/\sqrt{2}, the amplitude a(ω)a(\omega) is largest at ω=ω01−2ζ2\omega = \omega_0 \sqrt{1 - 2 \zeta^2}. For small ζ\zeta, the maximum is close to F/(2ζω02)F / (2 \zeta \omega_0^2), which is large. For ζ=0\zeta = 0 and ω≠ω0\omega \ne \omega_0, all solutions are bounded: xp=Fcos⁡(ωt)/(ω02−ω2)x_p = F \cos(\omega t) / (\omega_0^2 - \omega^2). The factor tt in the resonant solution comes from the rule of the method of undetermined coefficients: iω0i \omega_0 is a root of the characteristic polynomial.

Explanations

L1 human

If you push a swing at the right rhythm, each push adds to the motion, and the swing goes higher and higher. This is resonance: the driving frequency matches the natural frequency ω0\omega_0. Friction limits the growth, but the response is still very large near ω0\omega_0.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
