Order of a differential equation

Definition

Let F(x,y,y′,…,y(n))=0F\left(x, y, y', \dots, y^{(n)}\right) = 0 be an ordinary differential equation for an unknown function yy of xx. Its order is the largest integer kk such that the equation depends on the derivative y(k)y^{(k)}. For a system of equations, the order is the largest order of a derivative that occurs in the system.

Remarks

The equation y′=xyy' = x y has order 11, and the equation y′′+sin⁡y=0y'' + \sin y = 0 has order 22. The order does not depend on the powers of the derivatives: (y′)3=y(y')^3 = y has order 11. An equation of order nn can be changed into a first-order system of nn equations. See reduction to a first-order system.

Explanations

L1 human

The order tells you how many times the unknown function is differentiated, at most. An equation with y′y' only is of first order. An equation with y′′y'', but no higher derivative, is of second order.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
