Statement

Let II be an open interval, and let Ly=y(n)+an−1(x)y(n−1)+⋯+a0(x)yL y = y^{(n)} + a_{n-1}(x) y^{(n-1)} + \dots + a_0(x) y with continuous functions a0,…,an−1a_0, \dots, a_{n-1} on II. Let y1y_1 and y2y_2 be solutions of the homogeneous linear equation Ly=0L y = 0 on II, and let c1,c2c_1, c_2 be real numbers. Then c1y1+c2y2c_1 y_1 + c_2 y_2 is a solution of Ly=0L y = 0 on II.

Remarks

The proof is the linearity of LL: L(c1y1+c2y2)=c1Ly1+c2Ly2=0L(c_1 y_1 + c_2 y_2) = c_1 L y_1 + c_2 L y_2 = 0. The same argument gives a variant for right sides: if Ly1=b1L y_1 = b_1 and Ly2=b2L y_2 = b_2, then L(y1+y2)=b1+b2L(y_1 + y_2) = b_1 + b_2. The principle fails for nonlinear equations. For y′=y2y' = y^2, the function y=−1/xy = -1/x is a solution on x>0x > 0, but 2y2y is not.

Explanations

L1 human

For a linear equation, you can add solutions and scale them, and you get solutions again. In physics this is superposition: two waves that solve a linear wave equation add up to a third solution.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
