Reduction of order

Summary

Reduction of order is a method to find a second solution of a homogeneous linear equation from a known one. Let p,qp, q be continuous on an open interval II, and let y1y_1 be a solution of y′′+p(x)y′+q(x)y=0y'' + p(x) y' + q(x) y = 0 with no zero on II. Put y=v y1y = v\, y_1. Then yy is a solution if and only if y1v′′+(2y1′+p y1)v′=0y_1 v'' + (2 y_1' + p\, y_1) v' = 0, a first-order linear equation for v′v'. One solution gives y2=y1∫e−∫p dxy12 dxy_2 = y_1 \int \frac{e^{-\int p\, dx}}{y_1^2}\, dx, and (y1,y2)(y_1, y_2) is a fundamental system on II.

Remarks

Example: y1=exy_1 = e^{x} solves y′′−2y′+y=0y'' - 2 y' + y = 0. Here p=−2p = -2, so v′=e2x/e2x=1v' = e^{2x}/e^{2x} = 1, and y2=xexy_2 = x e^x. The Wronskian of y1y_1 and y2y_2 is e−∫p dxe^{-\int p\, dx}, which has no zero. This is consistent with Abel's identity. The same idea lowers the order by one for a linear equation of order nn.

Explanations

L1 human

If you know one solution, look for a second one as the first one times an unknown function vv. The terms without derivatives of vv cancel, because y1y_1 is a solution. What remains is a first-order equation for v′v', which is easy to solve.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge defines in: at least one definition (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of in: at least two examples (0 of 2)
  • edge not_instance_of in: at least one non-example (0 of 1)
  • edge specializes both: the more general notions and the special cases (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 12 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
