Eigenvalue method for linear systems
Summary
The eigenvalue method solves a homogeneous linear system with constant coefficients with the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of . If with , then is a solution. If has linearly independent eigenvectors with eigenvalues , then each solution is for unique constants . For a complex eigenvalue of a real matrix with eigenvector , the real and imaginary parts of are two real solutions.
Remarks
Example: has the eigenvalues and , with eigenvectors and . So . If has too few eigenvectors, generalized eigenvectors give solutions of the form times a polynomial in with vector coefficients. The eigenvalues decide the stability of the system.
Explanations
L1 human
Along an eigenvector, the matrix acts as multiplication by a number. So on this line the system is the simple equation , with solution . Write the start vector in a basis of eigenvectors, and let each part grow or decay at its own rate.
