definition

Homogeneous linear system with constant coefficients

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let AA be a real n×nn \times n matrix. The homogeneous linear system with constant coefficients given by AA is the system of linear differential equations x′(t)=A x(t)x'(t) = A\, x(t) for an unknown differentiable function x:R→Rnx : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}^n.

Remarks

Its solutions are x(t)=etAx(0)x(t) = e^{t A} x(0). See the matrix exponential as the solution. If Av=λvA v = \lambda v, then x(t)=eλtvx(t) = e^{\lambda t} v is a solution. The eigenvalue method builds all solutions from such solutions. Example: for A=(01−10)A = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, the solutions are rotations: x(t)=(acos⁡t+bsin⁡t,−asin⁡t+bcos⁡t)x(t) = \left(a \cos t + b \sin t, -a \sin t + b \cos t\right).

Explanations

L1 human

The rate of change of the vector xx is the matrix AA applied to xx, and AA does not change with time. This is the vector version of y′=ayy' = a y, whose solutions are eaty(0)e^{a t} y(0).

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
