Variation of constants formula for linear systems

Statement

Let II be an open interval, let A:I→Rn×nA : I \to \mathbb{R}^{n \times n} and b:I→Rnb : I \to \mathbb{R}^n be continuous, and let Φ\Phi be a fundamental matrix of x′=A(t)xx' = A(t) x on II. Let t0∈It_0 \in I and x0∈Rnx_0 \in \mathbb{R}^n. Then the unique solution on II of x′=A(t)x+b(t)x' = A(t) x + b(t), x(t0)=x0x(t_0) = x_0 is x(t)=Φ(t) Φ(t0)−1x0+Φ(t)∫t0tΦ(s)−1 b(s) ds,t∈I.x(t) = \Phi(t)\, \Phi(t_0)^{-1} x_0 + \Phi(t) \int_{t_0}^{t} \Phi(s)^{-1}\, b(s)\, ds, \qquad t \in I.

Remarks

For a constant matrix AA, take Φ(t)=etA\Phi(t) = e^{tA}. The formula becomes x(t)=e(t−t0)Ax0+∫t0te(t−s)A b(s) dsx(t) = e^{(t - t_0) A} x_0 + \int_{t_0}^{t} e^{(t - s) A}\, b(s)\, ds. The formula comes from the trial solution x(t)=Φ(t) c(t)x(t) = \Phi(t)\, c(t): the equation gives Φ(t) c′(t)=b(t)\Phi(t)\, c'(t) = b(t). This is variation of parameters for systems. For n=1n = 1, it is the solution formula for linear first-order equations.

Explanations

L1 human

The first term is the free motion from the initial state. The integral adds up the effect of the force b(s)b(s) at each earlier time ss, carried forward to time tt by the homogeneous system.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
