Initial value problem
Definition
Let be an open subset of , let be a function, and let . The initial value problem for at is the system A solution of the problem is a solution of the equation on an open interval with , such that . The condition is the initial condition.
Remarks
For an equation of order in explicit form, the initial conditions are the values . The reduction to a first-order system changes this problem into the problem above. The problem , has the unique solution . The Picard–Lindelöf theorem gives a unique local solution when is continuous and Lipschitz in . The Peano existence theorem gives a solution when is only continuous.
Explanations
L1 human
A differential equation alone usually has many solutions. The initial condition says where the solution starts, and this picks one solution. Suppose that you know the speed of a car at each moment and its position at the start. Then you know its position at each moment.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
