Logistic equation

Example

Let r>0r > 0 and K>0K > 0 be constants. The logistic equation is P′(t)=r P(t)(1−P(t)K).P'(t) = r\, P(t) \left(1 - \frac{P(t)}{K}\right). For an initial value P(0)=P0>0P(0) = P_0 > 0, its solution is P(t)=K1+(K−P0P0)e−rt,t≥0.P(t) = \frac{K}{1 + \left(\frac{K - P_0}{P_0}\right) e^{-r t}}, \qquad t \ge 0. With r=K=1r = K = 1, the function f(t)=1/(1+e−t)f(t) = 1 / \left(1 + e^{-t}\right) is the standard logistic function. It satisfies f′=f(1−f)f' = f(1 - f) and f(0)=1/2f(0) = 1/2.

Remarks

The constant functions P=0P = 0 and P=KP = K are the equilibrium points. For each P0>0P_0 > 0, P(t)→KP(t) \to K as t→∞t \to \infty. For small PP, the equation is close to P′=rPP' = r P, which is exponential growth. If 0<P0<K/20 < P_0 < K/2, the graph of PP is an S-shaped curve with its inflection point at the value P=K/2P = K/2. The equation is separable, and it is a Bernoulli equation with exponent 22.

Explanations

L1 human

The logistic equation is a model of a population with limited resources. When the population is small, it grows almost exponentially. When it is close to the capacity KK, the growth slows down and stops. The constant KK is the carrying capacity: the largest population that the environment can support.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
