Limit cycle

Definition

Let UU be an open subset of R2\mathbb{R}^2, let f:U→R2f : U \to \mathbb{R}^2 be continuously differentiable, and let φ\varphi be the flow of x′=f(x)x' = f(x). Let y∈Uy \in U be a point whose solution exists for all t≥0t \ge 0. Its ω\omega-limit set ω(y)\omega(y) is the set of points z∈Uz \in U such that φtk(y)→z\varphi_{t_k}(y) \to z for some sequence tk→∞t_k \to \infty. For a point yy whose solution exists for all t≤0t \le 0, the α\alpha-limit set α(y)\alpha(y) is defined in the same way with tk→−∞t_k \to -\infty. A limit cycle is a periodic orbit Γ\Gamma such that Γ=ω(y)\Gamma = \omega(y) or Γ=α(y)\Gamma = \alpha(y) for some point y∈Uy \in U that is not on Γ\Gamma.

Remarks

A limit cycle is stable if all nearby trajectories approach it as t→∞t \to \infty, and unstable if they approach it as t→−∞t \to -\infty. It can also be semi-stable. A linear system has no limit cycles: its periodic orbits, if any, fill a region around the origin. The van der Pol oscillator x′′−μ(1−x2)x′+x=0x'' - \mu (1 - x^2) x' + x = 0 with μ>0\mu > 0 has exactly one limit cycle, and it is stable. The Poincaré–Bendixson theorem is a main tool to prove that a limit cycle exists.

Explanations

L1 human

A limit cycle is an isolated loop in the phase plane that nearby motions spiral toward or away from. It models a self-sustained oscillation, such as a heartbeat, whose size does not depend on the initial state.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
